Few inflatables? Just Chip away at the beyond-rigatoni-like-structured (Penne please?) them plastic bones? Halloween has come crashing to a sugary candied conclusion. But not before the alley cats were spooked, if they were not caught with their costumed tails between their legs, (no prizes), or by a pirate that’s DEPP-osed, (maybe.) Or, did Zappa do it? Double, double P. —– But hence, tomorrow is Election Day, and I will provide detailed coverage and how-to-fight-through-the-chaff analysis that will include the local polling numbers. You will see that much sooner here than in the local paper, as they do not staff elections firsthand.

Hark Halloween has been buried, as the big inflatables are now being sacked and stored — they were slowly being replaced anyway by some bigger creatures of all, very tall types and rounds lengths of plastic, currently used as the centerpieces, not the ones that often end up laying flat on the ground, strung out.

As far as the bigger than gourds, such pumpkins were seen around town at the bars and antique shops, such as three of carefully chosen shades set in a triangle, of all different colors were the shapes painted on — they being squares and circles of orange, purple, white, yellow and black.

Triangle and trinitarian? In the midst of a Halloween haven there was a heaven, a Christmas fully decked out yard, set early on purpose by a family of conservative Christians, who obviously wanted to contrast with the bit wicked ones.

Pre-Halloween, barely, timed karaoke found a guy coming up for one song, nailing Monster Mash down to the slight Frankie-babie monster mumble, and this inspired another rather shy guy to have a real coming out to do an even-getting-better-throughout-the-song Halloween number, 666? Hudson Idol and Voice. Just no Dracula, God forbid Satan.

How would my Mom celebrate Halloween? No parties or trick-or-treaters, just a black cat that was repeatedly crossing her small-out-the-back-door patio, in the absence of some kitty candy, hoping to find that mouse. Seven times? I don’t think it went under a nearby ladder.

My driver Joan also had a possibly hurt kitty seen, crossing in front of us in the midst of the city’s treat-or-tricking district, causing her to pull over and check. It seemed to her OK, just spooked by all the hoopla. Be better … after elections?

There were behind the bar, babes with double hair bumps, each corner of the head, twice seen to make four total, and one to boot going all across the forehead. Slightly different tints and shades. A lot of people, fewer cars, and scenes that became a just bit ugly were beheld.

To that end, there also was bright orange, like the caution tape, ye ol’ corrections shirt, with torn sleeves. I wonder, where’d he get that smock? And as far as the Police Line, Don’t Cross, it was used in wider form to encircle an entire pond, (by the DNR wetland police?), and massively and creatively at many a place, like at Green Mill, which also takes the cake for having the most ghostly white decked-out front entrance and above-bar.

A nice lady spent some time oohing and aahing at the cats in an enclave of a downtown window, (neither black), but wait, she was bent over to attend to a drunk guy, rather. ‘Er a pirate. Depp and the boys were seen later.

Along the same stretch of the street, on the way back, a “priest” was talking cars, saying with $20 he could do better than the clunking car with an open-cover showing a machine head.

A swag black guy sported an open shirt and sash, and cool bad-pirate hat, walking alongside a girl who did not pass him on by.

Less skin than usual was seen out, but there could have been a little more emanating from underneath a particular lamp shade costume, complete with light, to show the goods.

Walk and hold a drink with your tail between your legs? That’s the jab taken toward an old hound or two out seeking prizes that don’t have rules about where your fifth, or even sixth leg, are placed. Couldn’t find them to slap anyway.

I haven’t seen my college buddy Matt since college days, so I haven’t “ragged” on him for a while. Not many trick or treaters, yet, he boldly captioned in a photo. (It might help that in this single image he looks a lot like a ’70s Frank Zappa. That name has a long history that rocks Hudson.)

One couple skipped the candy, offering visiting kids and their parents stuff like chili, maybe a fish fry or some chocolate salmon. (OK, this started out true, then got progressively strange.)

But now I’m off to make my own holiday meal, after chugging a “ghost” energy drink from A&W — back from my childhood treating by mom and dad at about the time I was really into actual trick or treating also — and I’ll be sprinkling gobs of ghost peppers on everything I make, even the potato salad!

This Halloween is marked by a spot on the calendar that is truly unusual — it falls on a Saturday, which is the perfect timing just like a zombie suddenly sitting straight up in a coffin, so people can start with the decidedly black revelry already on Thursday, and take Friday off and then go out for a prelim that night, then celebrate the utmost on Vampire King Saturday, (see a summary of such activity below), followed by eat the candy you collected come Sunday. Then there is the Daylight Savings Day debacle, also falling that night. Do we party down for one...
Where do we start? Like what scant space do you choose to squeeze into, if at the wrong sports bar, to get your Miller Lite or Leinies. Like the guy with the Brewer shirt and the cool closer-style-eyeglasses the day AFTER, who I told missed out on it by yes a day, and a pair of dollars if you were to check out something like the $6 special — or maybe it was for the Packers — of Leinenkugel’s Summer Shanty or better yet, Legacy Ale. Across the way were a odd-ball trio talking about the World Series going back to Game One,...
This night was an onslaught of arts patrons who would never go to an alternative rock arena show, mixing with fans like those sporting mohawks, or women with unreasonably short skirts, black seamed lines up the back of their stockinged legs, and nose rings. Mixing together well, and resembling what was on the paintings and other media in front of them. Chris Mars, now an award-winning artist after a ten-year stint with the also award-winning alternative group The Replacements, even as its drummer, was likely to be hit with questions aplenty about his activities with the band, artsy and also ambitious as far as...
The polka fans are revving it up. Convenience and grocery stores, not to mention sports bars, that are sponsors of the Brewers are amping it up, too, even up here in Hudson, 300-plus miles away from Milwaukee. Three-hundred? Was that, in pounds, the playing-day weight of sluggers Cecil Cooper, or George Scott? Has it been that long? Will tonight be the swan song for that World Series foe from Florida, down by the bay, leaving it sitting by the dock, crying in its beer with Jimmy Buffett? No Marguerita-ville. Laturalis, if a Tool fan, since this is at its base,...
When walking down Second Street in Hudson, you may have seen a sign in a doorway saying One Drop Refillery, and like me thought it was a distillery, like a new place to have a drink. That would not fill the bill. Rather, this new shop that’s like a small mill, as in a dispensary, but quickly grew into featuring much more though related goods, reduces one of your steps and will be a first step toward saving the environment. It’s tucked inside the north half of a long existing photography studio by Lisa Buth and being what the former name says, it’s...
