‘Urban Table’ reopens after five months, minus the olive and vine name, but keeping the same old ambiance. It adds a coffee and wine bar, $3 premium drinks prepared under the eye of a barista and the advanced eatery knowledge that comes from the new owner, Ben Jung, a face you’ll recognize from nearby Hudco To Go, who says music is on the way, too, back to this staple Hudson venue.

They’ve added a coffee bar, so you can have a foray of seating for four on stools in front of it, a wine bar and a petite table for two directly in front of the southwest window, and plenty of inexpensive drinks, but other than that The Urban Table as it is known is much like the former Urban Olive and Vine before it.

The man who is the brains behind Hudco To Go has brought those $3 premium drinks and more to the restaurant that is kitty-corner to the, again, southwest when you take Locust Street and venture onto Second — and the host ventures between freely — along with a diverse menu that invariably features thorough and lengthy listings of ingredients.

And yes, it is promised that there is music to come, maybe as soon as later this month, to replace the same old jazz standards that its predecessor featured on multiple nights a week before the past co-owner, Carol Trainor, fell ill more than a year ago. So it may be fitting that shades that are pulled more than halfway down on the windows on either side of a door with its screen variety virtually always open, would let in just the right amount of light when they are pulled to allow a brighted floor.

Saying dine, sip and gather, it is planned to be a place where you could not only listen to music on a weekend, but take advantage of things like small plates to be up and on your way within a reasonable period of time, and go to another show at someplace nearby like The Phipps Center For The Arts.

The menu offers salads, soups and quiche, (total of 11), sandwiches and wraps, (total of 13), and the aforementioned small plates (total of 10). Included are options for trying three different soups and the urban combo of two from the first category.

Drinks to rejuvenate, relax and renew feature iced tea, premium beverages*, the category of sodas, sparkling water, lemonade and juice*, hot chococlate (seasonal), coffee, flavored hot teas that may even come in a pot*, turmeric latte, hand crafted espresso and tea beverages*, and caffeine-free teas. Starred indicates the most choices. There are a lot of extras that can be added, most for a buck. An example of the completeness is the turmeric latte, where the bulk of the information is mentioned early, but in full, fifty words is used, down to the detail of a bit of pink salt. Seven seasonal extra flavors can be rotated into drinks.

Specialty premium beverages include Milwaukee’s own Sprecher Soda, Cheerwine from North Carolina, and on the light side Swoon.

Specialty food main ingredients rank among them black bean quinoa, asparagas with cashew, fig, Cuban, Greek, Tuscan, portabella, provolone, sweet thai chili, goat cheese, spinach antichoke, spicy feta, hummus, tomato basil, and the mother of them all, muhammara, Middle Eastern dip of roasted red peppers, walnuts, pomegranate molasses, and cayenne that is savory, sweet, and spicy with a hint of smokey. Served with veggies and taosted white flatbread (not GF) all for only $14.

The menu makes frequest use of various kinds of aioli, and interesting is the use together of orange marmalade cococut sauce and in another case, house made apple fig balsamic vinaigrette. Catching the eye is warm Ile De France Brie.

My personal favorite, reflecting the views you can have of a historic suburban street scape, is a jumbo cheddar cheese-stuffed pretzel, baked and topped with crumbled bacon and chipotle seasoned olive oil, then served with chipotle ranch. Variations of this can include stuffed with spinach and feta cheese, baked and topped with garlic olive oil and crumbled feta cheese, and served with greek dressing, and paired with homemade tomato basil soup.

Urban Table is at 520 Second Street and can be reached at (715) 690-2700 and standard social media platforms.

Last weekend, we combined a full moon, along with the day and evening entering into it, with a harvest moon and the day-into-night when the applicable seasons change. If you go out on the town, the Hudson downtown, you go less than a block before you see it’s different, and skewed in a crazed direction, even more on Friday, the night before the full moon, when the seconds ticked into Saturday. Bar workers will tell you a full moon has a significant effect on human behavior, especially when combined with other adjoining factors. So, less than a block heading south, there...
The autumn season, just started officially, is now far enough along to bring the pro football season to an (extra) point where a team as of this weekend could have, conceivably, faced all the other rivals in their division. Depending on which one we’re in. If they consist of five (teams), they’re still possibly alive. In our case, up in the Midwest, it started with those two rivals in states that are adjoining east-west, the ol’ Packers and Vikings, squaring off already in the season and of course division opener. Only the dreaded Bears, also in an adjoining state in the case...
Listen to your rock stars, not your politicians. And not those at wholesome or not, rally-around-the-flag hometown fests. Or seen on the city streets and federal freeways when Old Glory is shown in all its glory everywhere. And I walk and talk, and bawk and squawk, gingerly among them all. This as 9/11 is still all the rage, and at times being used not for glorifying the many fallen, but for gain, mostly political, whether in online forums or the hallowed halls of government, or by those who will take the opp to make a racial or culturally based point....
Being a Wisconsinite, west side, I’ve seen a few people I know pop up at the Minnesota State Fair, now and then and again, but not like this time, with a pop-up-stand artist at a talk show.I was with a friend and we sat down in the bleachers, and a guest was brought up that turned out to be — someone who I knew from back in Hudson, an artist with a co-op gallery she owned set up in the middle of the downtown a few years ago. When I had moved to that part of town, I crossed paths...

So many problems in our world, US and UK. How and when to bitch? Waiting for them to be named by a sizeable band, if they shed light on politics and ethical behavior in general, can make you numb. Has anyone else noticed, as we get older and grayer, the similarity in facial look between two who are on vocals, first a rapper and second a metal singer, knotted-side-hair Snoop Dogg and long and straight-to-collar Bruce Dickinson, one who spews island drinks as opposed to the other homemade beer, as Iron Maiden continues on in their latest with a gigantic gaggle of groups with requisite...
